Remember how it was? We, little ones, so wanted to grow up as soon as possible so that the whole world with its alluring possibilities would open up for us! It seemed that we could go wherever we wanted, as soon as we graduated from school. Psychologists assure us: up to ninety percent of yesterday’s schoolchildren enter adulthood with a sense of anticipation of something real, magical, long-awaited. They also report on inexorable statistics further: within ten years after graduation, every second person has a history of anxiety syndrome, every third is familiar with reactive or clinical depression. Almost all of them complain of fatigue, insomnia decreased libido. Not a very nice picture, right? Especially if you remember that we are talking about twenty-five-year-old young people. Moreover, those who outwardly everything was fine found themselves in this state: a stable salary, a cozy office, pleasant colleagues, career prospects … If nothing changed, by the age of forty, completely tired, indifferent, burned-out people who did not see their problem and worked, worked, worked … It is hard to believe that the same the second life to which we devote so much of our main life can bring us so many problems and worries. The good news is that you can break out of this vicious circle, however, the first step is to find the courage and admit to yourself that you have a problem. You will be surprised, but this is not always easy to do, because career difficulties are almost always relegated to the background. I remember a friend of mine told me what exactly helped him to leave a high-paying position in a large company and start his career as a musician. Once Pasha, after a hard day’s work, watched the series “Friends”, in which one of the characters, Chandler, suddenly quit his job. He occupied him for several long years and literally went nowhere. My friend was inspired by this episode and left his post the next day. It turned out to be easy to do, much easier than Pavel had imagined.

What to do if you realized that you are not doing your own thing, but you cannot rush into the pool with your head?

Psychologists strongly advise you to start … with a hobby! You will do what you love until you get paid for it. Remember that the path of a thousand steps begins with one, do not push yourself, give the time that you did not have in your school years. Allow yourself to enjoy an activity that will bring you pleasure, even if you do not yet imagine how you can earn it. The solution will come.

My close friend always got along with children. All our friend’s mothers adored when Mila came to visit, the kids were even happier. Mila worked as a director of a chain store, and colleagues idolized their boss: an excellent organizer by nature; clear, calm, kind, fair, and patient, Lyudmila Evgenievna was the favorite boss of all employees. Everything she argued and came out, but at some point, she confessed to me: “That’s it, I can’t take it anymore, there is no outlet!” And she went to work as an evening nanny in a kindergarten. It would seem, well, where else is the load, if you already give up? But surprisingly, a second wind opened in Mila. But what about those who chose a job to their liking, rejoiced every day, going to their colleagues in the office or to the factory, but at some point lost this joy? Why is this happening? Omnipresent psychologists name two main reasons: professional burnout and global changes in ourselves. Let’s talk about everything in order.

The term “burnout” appeared relatively long ago: specialists have been working with it for about forty years. Initially, it was believed that only representatives of the so-called rescue specialties “burn at work”: directly rescuers, firefighters, and policemen, doctors, and teachers. Psychotherapists also made it onto this list. But later it turned out that almost all working people are familiar with this ailment, from production shock workers to top managers of international companies.

You can predict whether you will burn out when you start working. It depends on several factors. First of all, your ability to “take a punch” is important (yes, we are talking about the very same stress resistance!) And find support and help when you need them. The team and the atmosphere in it are very important. It is difficult to feel at your best and enjoy the workflow when squabbles and omissions reign in the office, you fight gossip and gossip, and instead of a team game, you feel constant competition. Bosses and the attitude of your superiors towards you as an individual person plays a big role in determining what the probability of burnout as a specialist is.

My brother, who never knew how to share his experiences, moved from Russia to Europe to be able to develop as a professional. And at first, everything went fine: a career in the IT-sphere, which my brother simply adored, went uphill. But a few years later, he suddenly returned to Moscow, saying that he no longer wanted and could not work where he worked. It turned out that he had practically no contact with colleagues – the expected turn, the language barrier was to blame. Realizing what was happening, Zhenya “pulled up” his English and was able to establish relationships with fellow workers. With the leadership, which is typical, communication also reached a new level.

But my friend Ani was doing great with contacts – in the end, she worked as a PR person for the stars. Everyone could envy her career: constant parties, excellent income, demand, and respect for clients and colleagues. True, she did not have days off. Generally. Absolutely. She was appreciated because she was in touch, as they say, twenty-four by seven. Personal life was very closely intertwined with a professional one, and it was no longer clear where one ends (and whether it ends at all) and another begins. Favorite work, which was a source of inspiration, became a nightmare for her friend. She did not see a way out, ignored the psychotherapist’s delicate hints, and ended up in a hospital bed. The forced leave from the neurology department, where phones and laptops were banned, did her good. Finally, Anna accepted the unforgiving fact:

Standard burnout prevention is a regular and full-fledged weekend when you can literally and figuratively disconnect from the workflow and forget that you are a professional. It is very important to receive high-quality feedback from colleagues and superiors: when you understand that your work is valuable, that your efforts are necessary for the team and management, the motivation to work increases. Finally, you need to be able to manage processes, know that you can make decisions. Otherwise, you will get the feeling that you are just an insignificant screw in a huge mechanism.

Those who come out of this crisis, keeping their careers, can be envied – or sympathized with, because without a “reset” during this period it is difficult to expect miracles from themselves in the future. Precisely by the age of thirty, give or take a few years, we more or less know ourselves and our capabilities, have already learned to listen to our needs and set priorities. We can understand that the main thing is family or career, we understand how to find balance and harmony. By this age, others begin to take off their careers. Upwards are those who have come to awareness and are ready to work with their strengths and weaknesses, development zones, and desires. We all run as if in a team, obeying the voice that we heard years ago: “Hurry! It is important to be in time, it is important to start, to work! ” By whom, when, how – sometimes life puts us in such conditions that it doesn’t matter.
